Over £10,000 Of Support Now Available To South West Filmmakers

Exeter Phoenix is now inviting creative and inspiring proposals for its 2018 short film commission schemes with over £10,000 of support available. The process officially opened at the venue’s Two Short Nights film festival, which brought filmmakers and industry professionals to the city in celebration of short film.

The festival featured a sell-out screening premiering the films made for Exeter Phoenix’s 2017 film commissions. The four films were Repercussions by Charlie Coldfield, The Hardest Fight by Owain Astles, Totem by Steve Whittingham and Before I Go by Scott Stevens, which also scooped the festival’s Audience Choice Award. The festival also included a Live Pitch from teams of filmmakers competing to win the £1000 South West Animation Short Film Commission for 2018. The commission was awarded to Cornwall-based filmmaker Holly Summerson for her project Birdwatching which will be made over the next 12 months.

For the remaining 2018 film commissions, aspiring filmmakers from across the South West are now invited to submit new and inspiring ideas for films across three categories. The categories are Micro Film, Short Film and Artists Moving Image. All genres of film will be considered including drama, documentary, animation, experimental film and more.

Selected applications will be supported in the creation of their films throughout the coming year. Over £10,000 worth of support will be awarded in artist fees, training and equipment hire to enable the development of these five new films, which will premiere at next year’s Two Short Nights film festival.

Jonas Hawkins, Digital & Film Manager at Exeter Phoenix said ‘We’re proud to support emerging talent on the local filmmaking scene and we are looking forward to reading ambitious and creative ideas for new projects.’

Many of Exeter Phoenix’s previous commission winners have gone on to win awards and gain recognition within the industry, putting Exeter firmly on the filmmaking map.
