Growing up and realising your own potential is not just about exams and results, it’s about amazing experiences outside the classroom, that broaden your horizons and build your confidence, independence and resilience – character traits that can support mental wellbeing and prepare for the workplace and beyond.

The Gold DofE Residential with Reach Outdoors is a week long adventure and is a magnificent and memorable achievement for any young person. It can be the first step into a career in the outdoors or an introduction to a lifetime of adventure. Through a range of high adrenaline outdoor activities led by fully-trained, DofE Approved Activity Providers, the Gold Residential is a fantastic way to get young adults outdoors, being active, making fun memories, working as a team and building lifelong relationships.

Experts say that spending time on a river, in the sea, up a mountain, in woodland or in other wild places not only promotes physical activity but can also help with your mental health. What’s more, spending time in nature will remind you of its fragility and might encourage you to be more active on key environmental issues. Duke of Edinburgh research shows that a fifth of teenagers (20%) have never been for a walk in the countryside.

Richard Hanbury, Reach Outdoors Director says “We started these courses for people completing the DofE at Gold level or other similar awards that require a residential element. They are a fantastic experience to be involved in and everyone comes away with a desire to take part in new experiences in truly amazing natural environments. These courses are now the lifeblood of our business and it’s amazing to see the positive impact they have on both an individual and group level in just a week.”

The popularity of the Gold Residentials means Reach Outdoors have added a further 80 places for 2020 having sold out in all previous six summers.

Sophie, a previous DofE Student had this to say – “The whole Reach Outdoors team were all so welcoming and relaxed from the beginning of the trip, helping us all settle in and breaking the ice with activities and group cooking, which was actually really fun. Sarah, Jack and Cam were all helpful and friendly instructors and it was refreshing to be treated like an adult throughout the residential. The activities were extremely rewarding and well-organised – favourites were coasteering, gorge walking and giant SUP. The great team spirit that was created during the trip (maybe due to the baton!!) made it really enjoyable and allowed us to make good friends. Thanks to Cam for the fab star gazing! :)”
