BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET BRINGS BRAND NEW TRIPLE BILL TO TRURO

FRIDAY 12 & SATURDAY 13 MAY AT HALL FOR CORNWALL

This May, Birmingham Royal Ballet will clock up thousands of miles, travelling the length and breadth of England. The Company divides in two, performing a different mixed programme in the north and south of the country. Their sparkling triple bill is at Hall for Cornwall on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May.

The programme celebrates the power of storytelling – from Ancient Greek mythology to Shakespearean poetry – alongside the versatility and virtuosity of the Company’s world-class dancers. The highlight is set to be the debut of Arcadia, choreographed by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Ruth Brill. This brand new work unleashes the ancient god Pan as you’ve never seen him before, accompanied by a striking score composed by renowned saxophonist John Harle.

Arcadia is First Artist Ruth Brill’s first commission for the main-stage, following her choreographic successes with Matryoshka in 2015 and Flash Flock – a community flash mob for the Birmingham Weekender Festival. Prior to Arcadia’s world premiere at Birmingham Hippodrome in June, audiences in Truro will be treated to a preview of this exciting new ballet.

Ruth Brill commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of creating Arcadia. I’ve learnt so much throughout the process, and it’s such an honour to be part of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s choreographic legacy. I’m really looking forward to presenting an alternative, tour-able version of Arcadia on the road.”

Arcadia will be performed alongside Jessica Lang’s beautiful Wink. Danced to music and the spoken word, Lang brilliantly captures the poetry of five Shakespearean sonnets with her unique combination of contemporary and classical ballet. The programme is completed by José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane, which distils the passion and tension of Shakespeare’s Othello into a thrilling one-act tragedy, tightly focused on four characters and their jealousy. All three performances feature live music from the acclaimed Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
