A Paignton family are speaking out about their experience at Rowcroft to encourage more support for the 2000 ladies walking in the hospice’s Sleep Walk next Saturday 9 July.
Faye Jones, 37, her husband Robin, 44, and their daughters Abi, 15, and Poppy, 12, are appearing in a film that will be shared on the hospice’s social media channels.
The film encourages people to give whatever they can to help support the ladies walking their choice of five or ten miles through the night by texting BABS16 and either £5 or £10 to 70070.
In the film Faye, who worked at Sainsbury’s in Paignton, talks about being diagnosed with terminal cancer in March this year and how the hospice has made a big difference to her family.
She also talks about her own experience taking part in The Sleep Walk. She explained: “I have taken part in The Sleep Walk twice and both times were a lot of fun; the atmosphere is great and you feel empowered being with so many women.
“I never thought I’d be in this position; to be someone now needing to use Rowcroft’s services.
She added: “To all the ladies taking part in The Sleep Walk, I thank you. And to all those supporting the ladies, please donate and give whatever you can; it’s local and it’s needed.”
Faye’s husband Robin added: “I have never experienced anything quite like Rowcroft in my life; it’s an amazing place.
“It’s like one big happy family and has made us all more open about the future, now we know we have got people to turn to.
“I never thought for one day that we would be the one’s needing to use Rowcroft’s services, but we’re so grateful to them for what they’ve done.”
This year’s Sleep Walk has taken on an 80s theme and will see thousands of women walk from Torbay Leisure Centre to the Imperial Hotel in Torquay, and back again with the last expected to complete the route in the early hours of the morning.
Daniel Robson, Rowcroft’s Event Manager said: “Faye and her family’s experience at the hospice just goes to show what an amazing difference our walkers, and those who sponsor them, make to the lives of local people.
“A huge thank you to all those taking part, all those who’ve sponsored our walkers and to all the amazing volunteers who will be helping us on the night.”
